WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – Preliminary border data indicates a 37% decline in irregular crossings into the European Union during the initial seven months of 2026. According to Frontex, approximately 61,000 detections were recorded from January through July, a drop compared to the same period in 2025. The majority of the EU’s primary migration routes showed declines during this timeframe, with activity at external borders exhibiting significant variations across routes spanning the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and eastern borders.

The Eastern Mediterranean route registered 20,232 detections, making it the busiest during the seven months. This figure decreased by 28% from 28,068 in the previous year. The Central Mediterranean recorded 16,454 detections, a 55% reduction from 36,656. Together, these two routes represented about three-fifths of the total EU entry detections tracked in the data. Libya continued to be the primary departure country for crossings along the Central Mediterranean route throughout the reporting period.

Notably, the Western Mediterranean experienced the most significant growth among major routes. Detections there increased by 37%, reaching 11,217 from 8,175 in the first seven months of 2025. Sea crossings on this route totaled 8,648, compared to 7,096 in the previous year. Land detections through June rose to 2,569 from 1,079. Conversely, the Western African route declined sharply by 60% to 4,682. Detections along the Western Balkan route fell by 26% to 4,910, while the Eastern Land Border saw a 44% decrease to 3,209.

Western Mediterranean Diverges from Overall Downward Trend

Attempts to cross the United Kingdom via the Channel also dropped sharply during this period. Authorities recorded 22,469 attempted or successful crossings from the EU side, marking a 46% decrease from 41,647 last year. These Channel crossing figures are separate from the total irregular entries into the EU bloc. The data also shows a 9% increase in detections on the circular route to Albania, totaling 281. The overall seven-month count excludes exceptional border activity in Ceuta, Spain, near the end of July.

Frontex compiled these figures based on preliminary EUROSUR information and estimates available as of Aug. 4. The agency may revise the data as national authorities submit updated reports. Frontex’s count focuses on detections, not individual people, meaning a single person might be recorded multiple times if detected at different locations or during separate crossing attempts. This distinction affects how route totals should be interpreted across the dataset.

Decline Continues in July Data, Extending First Half Trends

The July figures reinforce the downward trend observed in the first half of 2026. By June, authorities had documented over 49,000 irregular border crossings, which is also 37% lower than in 2025. At that point, detections along the Western Mediterranean were up 17% compared to the previous year. The seven-month data now indicates a 37% increase, with the Western African route decreasing by 67% through June, though the overall decline over seven months narrows to 60%.

Approximately 3,800 Frontex personnel are deployed at the European Union’s external borders, assisting national authorities with border management, sea operations, and tasks related to EU migration and asylum policies. The latest data from border activities shows broad reductions across most key entry routes in the first seven months of 2026, with the Western Mediterranean remaining the primary exception. The Eastern and Central Mediterranean routes continue to account for the largest share of detected irregular entries.
