NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – United Nations humanitarian leader Tom Fletcher has called on governments and donors to increase their support for the Ebola response efforts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The epidemic has affected six provinces and continues to put immense pressure on healthcare systems. Fletcher emphasized that humanitarian operations require faster funding and dependable access to impacted communities. This appeal coincides with the authorities’ efforts to manage thousands of infections, widespread displacement, and ongoing insecurity in multiple regions.

DRC Ebola outbreak tops 6,000 cases amid urgent UN appeal
UN officials urge faster support for the DRC Ebola outbreak response and frontline health teams.

By September 1, the World Health Organization reported that the outbreak had surpassed 6,000 confirmed cases, with nearly 3,000 fatalities. Infections have been documented in sixty health zones across Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, and Tshopo. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus characterized this as the second-largest Ebola epidemic ever recorded, noting its rapid spread compared to past outbreaks. Since the emergency declaration, Ituri has remained the primary hub of transmission.

The initial detection of the outbreak occurred in May 2026, with tests confirming the presence of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus. WHO declared the situation a public health emergency of international concern. By August 26, officials confirmed 5,794 cases and 2,786 deaths, while also recording 1,293 recoveries. Response teams persist in testing suspected cases, tracing contacts, administering treatment, and engaging communities within affected districts.

Conflict and displacement worsen the challenges faced by responders

The Ebola outbreak is unfolding amid a larger humanitarian crisis across the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fletcher stated that almost 11 million people require humanitarian aid due to conflict, displacement, hunger, and malnutrition. Ongoing violence in eastern regions has hampered access for medical teams and relief workers. The United Nations activated an emergency response mechanism on June 9, with humanitarian hubs in Bunia and Beni supporting operations closer to communities affected by the outbreak.

Health workers are among those most at risk, with Fletcher noting that over 40 healthcare personnel have lost their lives to Ebola during this outbreak. WHO’s earlier data indicated 151 confirmed infections among health and care workers as of July 30, including 44 fatalities. Increased infection-control protocols, clinical training, and protective measures are now being implemented by health agencies. WHO has also reported ongoing transmission chains that remain unidentified, along with deaths occurring outside treatment centers.

Funding demands grow alongside vaccine development efforts

The updated 2026 humanitarian response plan for the Democratic Republic of the Congo estimates a need for $2.1 billion, with $300 million designated for Ebola-specific operations. Fletcher urged for larger, more adaptable contributions to support both the outbreak response and broader humanitarian priorities. Separately, WHO stated that the government-led six-month Ebola plan requires $1.3 billion, covering surveillance, treatment facilities, laboratories, community outreach, and other public health initiatives across the affected regions.

On September 1, WHO also revised its vaccination guidance as research continues into protection against the Bundibugyo virus. The organization clarified that current evidence does not confirm whether the licensed Ervebo vaccine offers significant protection against this Ebola strain in humans. It recommended administering vaccines solely within research protocols while clinical trials are ongoing. WHO and Africa CDC are supporting Congolese authorities as teams work to identify cases, treat patients, and reduce transmission across the six provinces impacted by the outbreak.
