July 2026 Sees Record Low for UK Graduate Job Openings Since 2016

LONDON / RankWire.AI / – Across the UK, the number of graduate job vacancies in July dropped by nearly 50% compared to the previous year, indicating a more competitive entry-level employment environment. Adzuna reported 8,383 graduate roles advertised during that month, down from 15,397 in July 2025. This represents a roughly 46% decline. The current total is also the lowest since the platform started tracking graduate vacancies in April 2016. In 2017, graduate openings had surpassed 55,000 at their peak.

UK graduate vacancies hit lowest level since 2016
Britain’s graduate jobs market is tightening as advertised vacancies reach a decade low.

The competition for jobs has intensified across the broader UK job market as well. In July, there were 2.14 jobseekers per vacancy, an increase from 1.93 a year earlier. This ratio reflects the entire economy’s employment opportunities rather than just graduate-specific roles. The figures for graduate vacancies are derived from online ads collected from over 1,000 sources, measuring advertised graduate openings within that dataset rather than all potential roles accessible to university graduates.

Official statistics point to a slowdown in demand within the wider employment sector. According to the Office for National Statistics, there were 707,000 job vacancies between May and July 2026, which is 6,000 fewer than in the previous three months. This number also fell 19,000 below the figure from the same period last year. Additionally, the unemployment rate per vacancy increased to 2.5 from 2.3 during April through June, compared to the same months in the previous year.

    Increased Competition for Graduate Candidates

This summer saw a record number of young people securing UK undergraduate places. UCAS data show that 262,820 UK 18-year-olds obtained a place by August 13, results day. This was 3% higher than the 255,130 recorded at the same stage in 2025. The UK 18-year-old entry rate reached 31.6%. These figures provide context for a labor market where many future graduates will eventually compete for professional and entry-level positions.

The level of competition among employers with formal graduate recruitment schemes is already intense. The Institute of Student Employers recorded over one million graduate applications during the 2024/25 recruitment cycle. Its survey showed that employers received an average of 140 applications for each graduate vacancy. These numbers highlight the high demand for applicants in established graduate hiring channels and coincide with the sharp decrease in advertised graduate vacancies observed in the latest monthly jobs data.

UK Job Market Continues to Face Challenges

Since the implementation of changes to employer National Insurance in April 2025, employment costs have shifted. The contribution rate increased from 13.8% to 15%, while the secondary threshold dropped from £9,100 to £5,000 annually. The latest vacancy survey from the national statistics office indicated that some small businesses have limited hiring due to higher labor and operational expenses. The data also revealed declines in vacancy levels across nine out of the 18 industry sectors surveyed.

Discussions about artificial intelligence’s influence on entry-level roles have gained prominence, although official studies remain limited on its specific impact. Skills England noted in August that separating AI’s effect from broader labor market trends remains a challenge. Meanwhile, between January and March 2026, 1.012 million individuals aged 16 to 24 were outside education, employment, or training, accounting for 13.5% of this age group—an increase of 89,000 from the previous year.
